ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is concerned with the personal reaction that an audience can have with a work of art. My interest in this has evolved during my artist development and I have used tools such sensory perception and the kind of historical and religious symbols that ate ingrained into general subconscious. I aim to influence the surrounding area, the emotional reactions and experience of the audience. I am interested in exploring ideas of why we feel certain ways when faced with different objects or why we believe certain things, whether religious or secular. This idea is paired with that of telling a story or communicating and idea, through the use of signs and ciphers. The most recent symbols I has been incorporating into my work originate in heraldry and the Renaissance and signal peace and protection. Therefore my work aims to create a ‘safe’ space for viewer, artist and the surrounding space.
I am interested in a return to more traditional imagery from a variety of sources and cultures, and the relevance that they now have, with our increasingly modern lives. With increasing levels of globalisation the idea of translating and interpreting imagery and ideas from both far away and closer to home has become an important part of my artwork. Now almost everything, including human life, emotion and the universe is rationalised and seen to adhere to a strict set of universal laws. This means that notions such as the human soul and the sublime are called in question; because of this many are returning to ideas of faith as a way of keeping some indefinable quality to the modern world and show the need for continued spirituality.
