ARTIST STATEMENT

My work currently takes the form of theatrical sculpture stylistically leaning towards the absurd and gothic. Primarily dealing with the insolubility of existential problems, work also hints at suburban politics (and its indoctrinating ideological structures) rhymed with environmental decay. Objects provide implied narratives whilst also operating on a symbolic level; acting as social signifiers and allegorical ideological apparatus. Anecdote and metaphor synthesize to create one-lined theatrical parables echoing certain undercurrents of society. Abandonment and passive anxiety are both heavily featured and, whilst hinting at symbolism, the works maintain their link to absurdism by refusing to impart hierarchies of significance. The frozen figures of the older work escape pathos by becoming ciphers dryly reminiscent of Beckett’s Molloy or Kafka’s Herr K. Like these absurdist characters there is no resolution in sight, which is not bemoaned but just left there for the viewer to feel a bit ill at ease whilst indulging in a level of morbid interest. Shaped by, trapped or impaled on ideological apparatus; for these ciphers of contemporary man and his purgatorial society failure is always impending and never finalized. Nietzsche’s idea of eternal recurrence echoes in the hopeless cyclical nature of the more recent animated pieces.
